Family Planning Services

Family planning allows individuals and couples to anticipate and attain their desired number of children and the spacing and timing of their births. It is achieved through use of contraceptive methods and the treatment of involuntary infertility. A ability to space and limit her pregnancies has a direct impact on her health and well-being as well as on the outcome of each pregnancy. (WHO, n.d.)

Famplan offers a wide variety of contraceptives including IUD’s, injectables, implants, oral, and male and female condoms. Clients who are interested in male or female will offered counseling services through Famplan and will referred to a preferred provider.

Termination of Pregnancy Services

Termination of Pregnancy is the term used to refer to the ending of a pregnancy using various methods. Jamaican law prohibits the practice of termination of pregnancy methods, providing for stiff penalties for users, and practitioners.

Famplan Jamaica/JFPA does not deliver termination of pregnancy procedures, but we provide a range of pre- and post termination of pregnancy counseling, and post termination of pregnancy medical care:

Pre-Termination of Pregnancy Counseling- Harm Reduction

Anxiety is normal when one is about to undergo a medical procedure. During this counseling session you are advised of the medical options available for terminating an unwanted pregnancy, which will reduce harm while undergoing the procedure. 

Pre-Termination of Pregnancy Counseling- Pregnancy Options incl. Family Planning

Health practitioners want to know that you feel comfortable with your decision to abort. Your fears and concerns are addressed and information about alternative actions are provided, so that you are able to make the most appropriate choice. Family planning is also discussed in this counseling session to ensure that you know how to prevent other unintended pregnancies and to ensure your family fits into your current life plan.

Post Termination of Pregnancy Consultation- Treatment of Complications

You will be screened and examined by one of our medical doctors. After this treatment is given, and referrals for laboratory or specialist services are made.

Post Termination of Pregnancy Counseling- Family Planning Methods

After undergoing your surgery it is important to remember to start thinking about the prevention of other unwanted pregnancies. Our health practitioners will spend the time to ensure that you have all the information you need about our wide range of contraceptive methods. Practitioners will also discuss a suitable timeline for you to get on a modern contraceptive method of your choice.

Post Termination of Pregnancy Counseling- Harm Reduction

This is a follow-up to pre-counseling for harm reduction. Here the practitioner discusses how to care for yourself to ensure you stay healthy, and reduce infection after the procedure.

Post Termination of Pregnancy Counseling- Family Planning

It is normal for women to choose to terminate unwanted pregancies. After experiencing one unwanted pregnancy that you have had to terminate, it is the right time to look at your plans for a family. This will better poise you to conduct goal setting and prioritisation, which will help you to prevent other unwanted pregnancies and ensure you get pregnant when you are ready to start a family.

Gender-based Violence

“Violence against women” means any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivations of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.

Postnatal Care

Children 0-6 years of age receive physical exams, immunizations, and nutritional and health management counseling for mothers are provided.
